THE POWER OF VOID
Sound painting | 2018
This is the evidence of the specific moment and living record of the moment with visual and sound.
This work is about the philosophical idea of ‘void’ in terms of East Asian culture. In Western paintings, at the most basic level, ‘void’ refers to ‘unpainted, empty space’ and it is usually called as negative space in the West. But in East Asia, much more complex and rich meaning is implied in the idea of void under the influence of Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism. Therefore, void is very tight, dense space and full of something so that even one needle can not penetrate. I see as opposite perspective of Horror Vacui. So it is a space of infinite possibilities and where you can expand your imagination and thoughts. The void is not empty at all. This beauty of empty space is not just in paintings but also in every genre including music, dance, theater, poetry, literature, etc.
There is a 3D sound in the installation. I painted with mop and broom with Chinese ink. And recorded the sound while I was painting and made that into 3D panning sound so the audience can ‘listen’ to the painting and feel and experience the invisible space and invisible movement of the painting.
